Through videos of the forum, the general public will learn about the importance of sustainability as it relates to the private sector (ie. companies and corporations) as well as the public sector (government and semi-governmental institutions). The videos further highlight issues related to gas emissions, renewable energy, agricultural productivity, waste management, and water shortage.

“I hope that giving the general public access to video footage of these discussions has shed light on some of the challenges that we are currently facing in the region. We aspire for the REUSE Speakers Forum to be a stepping stone for many more discussions that will lead to a change in the way that corporations do business as well as the way that governments regulate them,” says Zahed Sultan.

Dow Marine Conservation Program Clears Over One Ton of Waste from Kuwait’s Beaches
The Dow Marine Conversation Program (DMCP) has helped clear over one ton of waste from Kuwait’s beaches since April 2011, in an effort to preserve the country’s coastal habitats and marine ecosystems. DMCP is a sustained, year-long program introduced by the Dow Chemical Company and en.v as part of Al Yaal, the first nationwide marine conservation initiative to protect Kuwait’s rich marine ecosystem.
An estimated 1,300-kgs of waste, which included metal, paper and plastic, was collected by 97 volunteers who covered 64,000 square meters of beach and shoreline during seven beach cleaning events held since the Program was launched in April 2011.

Volunteers, along with members from K’S PATH, the Kuwait Diving Team, the Climate Change Project, the Green Target Company, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and Spread The Passion collected terrestrial marine waste from Doha beach, Sulaibikhat beach and Umm Almaradim island. The collected waste has been recycled.

“The Dow Marine Conversation Program is an excellent example of how cooperation, between businesses and responsible citizens, can help make a difference to our environment,” said Jamel Attal, Country Managing Director, Dow Kuwait.

“As a company with a global commitment to preserving our planet and promoting sustainable practices, it was only fitting for us to support this initiative to help conserve Kuwait’s valuable coastal habitats and marine ecosystems. Its success so far, in clearing over a ton of waste from Kuwait’s beaches, helps validate the need for such a program and we are pleased to have been able to play a role,” added Attal.

A total of three clean-ups a month are scheduled until the end of December 2011. Efforts are also underway to collaborate with key government entities for large format clean-ups, signage installation and waste management facilities, in addition to providing additional research findings on Kuwait’s marine environment.

“Dow’s Marine Conservation Program has seen an encouraging and positive response in its first three months. Members of Kuwait’s wider community have without a doubt, recognized the program’s aims and objectives,” said Zahed Sultan, Managing Partner and CEO of en.v. “Being the first sustained multi-level program of its kind, Dow’s Marine Conservation Program has set an example of how businesses and society can work together towards promoting environmental consciousness and making a meaningful difference.”

As part of its ongoing efforts, the DMCP has continued to promote interest amongst the youth at various local exhibitions and trade forums, including the Proud to Be Kuwaiti Event, the Kuwait Environmental Month Conference, Kuwait Energy, Water and Electricity 2011 and the Kuwait University’s College for Women’s Vocational Exhibition. Prospective volunteers were signed up on the spot to participate in future clean-up initiatives.

Kuwait,June 15 – 2011.en.v launched Kuwait’s “Migratory Birds” program to remove human-caused waste in known habitats for migratory marine birds through a series of targeted shoreline cleanups of hazardous and recyclable materials. The program is funded by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Kuwait Limited.

Kuwait’s coastline is host to over 25 species of migrating birds who have come to rely on Kuwait’s shorelines as a necessary stop during their seasonal movement across the globe for the past several decades. The shoreline also serves as natural nesting grounds for marine birds, however high levels of human-caused waste on the coastline threatens to endanger the fragile ecosystem.

The program was kicked-off with two cleanups on the Shuwaikh shoreline strip, a well-documented habitat for migrating birds. The cleanups were conducted by the program’s lead operations partner: Kuwait Society for Protection of Animals and Their Habitat (K’S PATH) and volunteers from other non-profits organizations including the Green Target Company (GTC), the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), and the Spread The Passion organization. Together, all participating parties and volunteers have collectively removed over 260 kilograms of hazardous plastics, metals, and paper waste from a short shoreline strip of 800 square meters.

This is Kuwait’s first environmental program targeted to preserve the habitats of marine birds and is led by ‘Al Yaal’, an initiative created by ‘En.v’, a leading Kuwait-based organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world.

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Kuwait Limited President Faycel Bensaid said, “ExxonMobil Kuwait has a long-standing commitment to serving our community by creating and supporting initiatives that yield real, tangible benefits for our community. The Migratory Birds program is another ambitious initiative that aims to preserve habitats for migratory birds. We thank all those who have supported these activities, and we look-forward to even more participants for cleanup efforts in the future.”

En.v will organize and execute monthly cleanup activities on targeted marine habitats over the course of the year. Volunteering opportunities are open to everyone. Interested individuals, corporations, or schools should please visit the Al Yaal website alyaal.com to participate. The next two scheduled cleanup activities will take place on Friday, 01 July 2011 at Shuwaikh Beach, next to the Medical City area, and on Friday, 05 August 2011 at Shuwaikh Beach, next to the KISR.

“It is a lesser-known fact that Kuwait has a rich marine ecosystem and is home to common and rare species of migratory birds at different periods throughout the year. Protecting their habitat is paramount to preserve marine life for future generations, and we are very thankful for ExxonMobil’s leading role in this regard,” said En.v Managing Partner & CEO Zahed Sultan.

“The success of this program largely rests in the hands of responsible citizens who take pride in their natural heritage. We are very keen to see greater participation from all members of society, including government agencies, environmental groups, educational institutions, and families. Community participation is key to sustaining the success of this initiative and to the growth of the consciousness of conservation in our society,” Sultan added.

The ‘Migratory Birds’ year-long program will include several other on-the-ground initiatives to protect Kuwait’s coastlines as well as educational roadshows across schools and universities to educate the community about the importance of providing a safe resting place for migratory birds. The roadshow program will include bird specialists who will share the progress and impact of the conservation efforts in these habitats.

ExxonMobil’s Public and Government Affairs Manager Aseel Al-Turkait said, “This is a major community drive to clean up these habitats, and education and awareness are both key to the sustainability of our conservation efforts.”

As recent as May 2011, over 25 migratory bird species were spotted along the stretch protected by the ‘Migratory Birds’ program. These species include the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterusroseus) and the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopushimantopus). Both species flock at nesting colonies at the seafront while other species such as Yellow Wagtails, Black-headed Wagtails, and the Common Tern are passage migrants. The Greater Flamingos in particular, have been repeatedly visiting Kuwait’s shoreline for decades, although in recent years their numbers have dwindled primarily due to a decline in their source of food endangered by marine waste.

ExxonMobil is a global supporter of social and environmental initiatives.

Kuwait City, 16 April 2011: Dow Chemical held the official launch of its sustained, year-long program entitled ‘Dow’s Marine Conservation Program’ at Sulaibikhat beach on Saturday, April 16th.
The multi-lateral Program holds the distinction of being the lead corporate patron of ‘Al Yaal” – Kuwait’s first nationwide marine conservation initiative developed by en.v – a leading Kuwait-based organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world, in partnership with K’S PATH (Kuwait Society for Protection of Animals and Their Habitat). The Program realizes Dow’s global core value of ‘Protecting our Planet’ and solicits greater civic responsibility. In Kuwait, Dow is spearheading the sustainability dialogue alongside en.v and encourages community stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices.

“At Dow we strive to be an active part of the communities we operate in and we look for opportunities to contribute to the betterment of the societies we are a part of,” said Jamel Attal, Managing Director, Dow Chemical in Kuwait. “With en.v, the Dow Marine Conservation Program, is another step in fulfilling one of our core values; “Protecting our Planet.” We had a great turnout and the volunteers did an excellent job in kicking off the program and we’re looking forward to continuing the momentum.”

The launch at Sulaibikhat beach mobilized the clean-up efforts of 33 volunteers from various non-profit, environmental and volunteer organizations such as the Kuwait Diving Team, the Climate Change Project, the Green Target Company, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), Spread The Passion, and K’S PATH. Over 280kgs of terrestrial marine waste collected in biodegradable bags were methodically segregated into categories of plastic, metal, paper and miscellaneous for recycling. Approximately 6000 square meters of beach and shoreline were covered in four hours, with precautionary measures to preserve the natural habitat and marine vegetation. Site surveys and test clean-ups for the Program were held at Doha Beach and Um Almaradim Island recently, accumulating a total of over 200kgs of terrestrial marine waste, of which plastic bottles account for 50%.

“Dow’s Marine Conservation Program has witnessed a positive response from different sections of the wider community, both at the Sualibikhat launch and at the test-clean-ups at Um Almaradim Island and Doha beach,” said Zahed Sultan, Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer, The en.v Initiative. “By being the first to launch their program, Dow has paved the way for other corporate entities who wish to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility and employee engagement in protecting Kuwait’s rich and fragile marine ecosystem. The success of ‘Al Yaal’ rests largely with active participation from universities, schools, non-profit organizations, environmental groups, government bodies and corporate entities. We invite the entire nation to join hands in contributing towards protecting our marine resources.”

Dow’s Marine Conservation Program engages volunteer groups, government agencies and educational institutions in a concentrated effort to protect and restore the rich marine ecosystem of beaches along Kuwait’s bay and the islands of Um Almaradim, Quaroh and Kubbar. These areas are abundant in marine life and coral reefs and serve as natural nesting grounds for turtles and migratory birds. Their fragile balance is endangered by indiscriminate disposal of direct and indirect man-made waste. While weekly terrestrial and underwater clean-ups conducted through waste management briefings and safety standards form the Program’s reactionary component, an educational roadshow will sensitize private schools, public schools and universities to become active participants in protecting Kuwait’s marine environment.

The Sense & Sustainability panel discussion promoted eco-friendly business and living
Kuwait City, Kuwait – 3rd April, 2011- The en.v Initiative’, a leading organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab World and a subsidiary of El Boutique Creative Group organized the REUSE Speaker Forum on March 28th 2011. The REUSE Speakers Forum is a series of panel discussions that was the first of its kind in the country. The purpose of the forum was to promote a dialogue on sustainability in the region and spark a discussion on ways that can further put into perspective the challenges that the Arab world is facing regarding environmental issues.

Dow Chemical reaffirmed its support for REUSE – Kuwait’s foremost expo dedicated to promoting eco-friendly, sustainable living – as Title Partner of the REUSE Speakers Forum. The event was held on the 28th of March, 2011 at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) and was also sponsored by Agility.

Bringing together thought leaders, stakeholders and decision makers from Kuwait and across the globe, the forum addressed some of the most pressing sustainability and environmental challenges facing Kuwait today.

The panelists included Dr. Anne Wallin, Director of EH&S and Sustainability for Dow EMEA; Najib Saab, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Bia Wal Tanmia, Secretary General of the Arab Forum for Environment & Development (AFED) and President of MECTAT; Chad Boettcher, Senior Vice President of Social Innovation, Weber Shandwick; Captain Ali Haider, Vice President of Kuwait Environmental Public Authority (EPA); Dr. Lia Carol Seighart, Senior Environmental Economist, Regional Finance Coordinator MENA Region Sustainable Development, The World Bank; Dr. Sami Al-Yakoob, Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Environmental General Trading and Contracting Company (GETCO); and Tarek Sultan, Chairman and Managing Director of Agility.

During the forum, the panelists touched on the importance of sustainability as it related to the private sector (ie. companies and corporations) as well as the public sector (government and semi-governmental institutions). Among the issues discussed were: gas emissions, renewable energy, agricultural productivity, waste management and water shortage. Mediated by the en.v Initiative’s CEO and Managing Partner, Zahed Sultan, the forum was opened by a keynote speech from Markus Wildi, Vice President of Corporate Development in Kuwait, and President of Dow Middle East.

“The en.v Initiative is increasingly attracting members of the community to pledge their support for environmental preservation and social development, and the REUSE Speakers forum is an ideal platform for industry leaders to discuss issues of environmental responsibility and sustainability,” Commented Mr. Sultan. “Together with Dow, we are aiming to pave the sustainable way forward, and it was exciting to see thought-provoking ideas being raised for this movement.” Concluded Sultan.

Markus Wildi, Vice President of Corporate Development in Kuwait, and President of Dow Middle East, commented: “Our sponsorship and participation in the en.v REUSE Speakers Forum is part of our long term commitment to both the region and sustainability. Raising awareness to help protect the Kuwaiti
environment, and to encourage sustainable practices in the Kuwaiti community are important because this planet and its people are what enable us to address global challenges and we understand that the health of our business is intertwined with the health of the communities we are a part of.”

Zahed Sultan closed the forum by saying, “It has been a privilege to share the stage with panelists of this caliber whom are pioneers within their industries. I hope these discussions have shed light on some of the challenges that we are currently facing in the region. We aspire for the REUSE Speakers Forum to be a stepping stone for many more discussions that will lead to a change in the way that corporations do business as well as the way that governments regulate them.”

About REUSE

Kuwait, November 11th, 2010: The en.v Initiative (en.v), an organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world, announces the launch of the REUSE exposition. In its fourth year, REUSE 4.0 will be held on January 11th -13th, 2011 at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) from 4pm to 9pm daily.

REUSE 4.0 will serve as an opportunity for non-profit organizations, companies, professionals and aspiring creative talents to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of social responsibility and sustainability via a range of artistic mediums and interactive activities for the general public.
REUSE’s organic growth over the recent years has led The en.v Initiative to position this year’s event as Kuwait’s premier creative exposition for sustainable (eco-friendly) thought.

Supported by a Title Partnership from Dow Chemical EMEA, a host of private sector partners and 150+ international and local participants from diverse disciplines, REUSE 4.0 will serve as an interactive means for dialogue and action amongst the private sector, public sector and civil society.

In accordance with The en.v Initiative’s ethos towards environmental responsibility, REUSE is devised, executed as a “Carbon Neutral” event. Accordingly, en.v ensures environmental concerns are addressed and documented during every phase of the exposition. Upon completion of the exposition, en.v conducts an internal carbon footprint audit and offsets all emissions by investing in a “Climate Friendly” project.

About en.v
en.v (a subsidiary of El Boutique Creative Group www.elboutique.com) is an initiative dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world. en.v’s primary objective is to seek out public sector bodies, private sector and civil society organizations in the region, document their efforts, and create interactivity between them towards developing a more thought-conscious society. Using formats that are appealing to the masses, en.v strives to develop mediums that entities can utilize as platforms for communicating their social efforts and engaging their respective stakeholder communities.

The motives behind our reactions to situations and events in our daily lives often go unexamined and unnoticed. They become second nature to us and we forgo any real investigation into their origins or meanings.

In Issue 005: the Ethics and Transparency Edition, en.v explores the ethical motives behind our actions and reactions in business, government, society and culture, including the role that ethics plays in our daily lives and decision-making processes. A special focus is made on the transparency of the electoral process in Beirut as well as the ethical motivations and developments behind the election of Kuwait’s first female members of parliament.

In the end, it is only through the sum of our individual desires for reform that real change can take place. It is up to us to remain steadfast and resilient.

Pick up the latest issue of en.v, Issue 005: Ethics & Transparency, at all major bookstores and newsstands in Kuwait, the UAE, and Lebanon – and now at select boutiques in Kuwait as well.
